As a resident of Vimont for the past 20 years, I’d like to explain the evolution of this beautiful and ever-changing part of Laval.

On September 10, 1904, Vimont was created as the municipality of the parish of Saint-Elzéar, by proclamation of the Lieutenant-Governor of the Province of Quebec. Unique in the history of Île Jésus, its territory is made up of parts of 3 parish municipalities: Sainte-Rose de Lima, Saint-Vincent de Paul and Saint-Martin.

Vimont is a neighborhood in the city of Laval, Quebec. It’s also known as the heart of Laval, since it’s relatively central to Île Jésus. It is named in honor of the Jesuit Barthélemy Vimont. It is the only district in the city not bounded at one point by a river. In 2011, the population was 30,808.

Along the arterial roads of Autoroute Laval (440), Boulevard des Laurentides and Boulevard René-Laennec, you’ll find a number of shops and restaurants. In addition, there are some 15 small neighborhood parks, two outdoor swimming pools (Prévost and Paradis), an arena (Aréna Lucerne) and a community center3. The architecture of this neighborhood is characterized by “bungalow”-type homes, but developments over the past 15 years have seen the appearance of many condo buildings, as elsewhere on the island. The Cité-de-la-Santé de Laval hospital, located on boulevard René-Laennec in Vimont, is the only hospital in Laval.

There are four elementary schools in Vimont (Paul-Comtois, Le Sentier, Père-Vimont and Les Explorateurs), but no high schools. The secondary schools serving the neighborhood are located in Auteuil, namely Odyssée-des-Jeunes (Secondary 1 to 2) and Horizon Jeunesse (Secondary 3 to 5). Vimont is served by the Société de transport de Laval bus network, with several bus routes, including 17, 27, 31, 39, 41, 43, 45, 70, 73 and 74.
